Batik is a special kind of wax-resist dyeing used to produce different patterns on clothes. Here, different blocking media, mainly wax, are used to block some areas on a cloth from getting dyed. This results in a white print on a darker background, giving a striking and beautiful contrast. Originating from Indonesia and China, these prints are increasingly becoming popular in India due to their attractive designs and rough-and-tough prints. A different type of batik, also known as ‘pen batik’ also follows the same principle, but using a pen-like tool called canting. This is a more detailed form of work, and therefore takes a lot longer to be produced than classic batik.
